To save wavs on a PC:

Place your cursor over the link to the sound file. Then right click on the Wav and use the "Save target as" option from the pop-up menu.  A save file dialog box will open asking you where you want to save it on your hard drive . If you don't have a folder on your hard drive for sounds, this might be a good time to create one. Otherwise, browse to where you want to save the file and hit "Save." The file should start downloading to that folder.

To use the wavs as "Event Sounds (PC):

Click on the "Start" menu (usually on the bottom left on yout desktop), then select "Settings," then "Control Panel." Once the control panels appear, double click the "Sounds" icon. A box should then pop-up that shows you all the sounds associated with the different events on your computer (i.e. startup, shutdown, various error messages). To make a ZIM or SIMPSONS WAV your startup sound, scroll down the "Events" window until you see "Start Windows." Click it once. In the "Sound" box underneath the "Events" box you'll see the word "Browse." Click once on that. Navigate to the folder that you created or that holds the WAV(s) you have downloaded. Select the WAV you want to use and click "OK."

So you know, you can test the new sound out by pressing the little play button next to where it says "Preview." Once you're satisfied that this is the sound you want your computer to play for that particular event, hit "OK"! You can follow the same procedure to change the sound for any of the events on your computer.

To save wavs on a MAC:

Click your mouse button over the Wav and select the "Save links as" or "Download link to disk" option of your browser. A save file dialog box will open. Then click save.

To use the wavs as "event sounds" on a MAC:

Macs come with Startup and Shutdown Items folders. A sound can be put in one of these and it will play at startup or shutdown. However, if you keep the sound in the .WAV format QuickTime Player will open at startup and attempt to play the sound. To avoid this, you need to convert the sound to a standard Mac system sound that your MAC can play without any help.

In order to convert the wav to a MAC OS System Sound, you need to download sound converter software:

SoundAPP: This software is free and will play and convert sounds in many different formats.

ConvertMachine: This is shareware and only converts sounds to many different formats.

Once you've dowloaded the software and decompressed it with Stuffit Expander, double-click on the icon of the converter you downloaded.

The software will launch, set up the conversion settings to convert the wav to MAC OS or System Sound.

For either software, choose "File", then "Convert" a dialog box will open. Locate the sound you want to convert and click "Save" (or "Convert", depending on which software you choose :). The conversion process will then begin.

Once you have converted the wav to a MAC OS System Sound, go to your "Hard Drive", then "System Folder". In the System Folder, you will see a Startup Items Folder and Shutdown Items Folder. With your mouse, drag the sound you want to use for startup to the Startup Items Folder and the sound you want to use for shutdown to the Shutdown Items Folder.

To use a sound as an "Alert" for MAC:

Convert the wav to a MAC OS Sytem Sound. Then go to "Hard Drive"icon on your desktop, then "System Folder". In the System Folder, you will see a System Suitcase (the icon should look like a suitcase), with your mouse, drag the sound you want to use to the suitcase. After the sound is in the suitcse, go to "The Apple Menu" choose "Control Panels" then "Sound". The Sound Control Panel will open. Under the "Alerts" tab, click once on the sound you want to use as your alert and then close the window.

    AOL Users:

As a result of AOL recently updating it's web browser , some features that made saving wav files easy are now totally gone. The AOL browser uses a sound program from which the file being played cannot be saved onto your computer. However, this can be fixed so you can play and save wav files:

When running AOL, click on "Members", go down to "Preferences". Click on the "WWW Icon". Then click on The "Helper Applications Icon". Scroll down to the bottom and click once on "WAV". Then click on "Modify". Click on "Use a Separate Application". From there, select a separate application (such as Windows Sound Recorder or Media Player) that can play wavs and save them. Click on "OK". After all that, you should hopefully be able to save all sorts of wavs you find on the internet.
